  • women who regularly ate yogurt containing beneficial bacteria–> improved brain function
    • decreased activity in brain regions that control central processing of emotion and sensation:
      • Insular cortex (insula)–> functions linked to the regulation of our body’s homeostasis, and to our emotions (perception, motor control, self-awareness, cognitive functioning, and interpersonal experience)
      • Somatosensory cortex–> linked to our body’s ability to interpret a wide variety of sensations

Beware Of Commercial Yogurt Preparations

  • notoriously unhealthy–> loaded with artificial sweeteners, colors, flavorings, and sugar
  • have clinically insignificant levels of beneficial bacteria
  • best to make our own yogurt from raw milk—especially if wanting to address depression through dietary interventions

      • fermented grass-fed organic milk such as kefir
      • pickled fermentations of cabbage, turnips, eggplant, cucumbers, onions, squash, and carrots
      • natto (fermented soy)
  • fermented vegetables
    • excellent way to supply beneficial bacteria back into our gut
    • can be great source of vitamin K2
  • probiotic supplement (the majority of our nutrients needs to come from food, but good to take them if you don’t eat fermented foods on a regular basis
